Scubadiving Magazine 2007 Photo Contest Results    [ Photography ]

I haven’t been spending much time pursuing photo contests lately, but I did send a couple to the Scubadiving Magazine contest this year. One of them, a Denise pygmy seahorse from the recent trip to the Solomons Islands, received an Honorable Mention in the Macro category. You can see it, and the rest of the winners at the Scubadiving Photo Contest webpage. You’ll have to dig through a fair number of photos to get to my HM in the Macro category, so here it is, as a shortcut:

Solomons 2006 Favorite of the Day, May 26, 2007    [ Diving,Photography,Travel ]

It’s Memorial Day holiday weekend here in the States, and in honor of all the heroes who have fallen for our country, I’m posting a red, white and blue fish for the favorite today.

This fish is called an Elegant Dartfish, and is related to the maddening Fire Dartfish. They like to flirt with photographers and then zip into their hole at the slightest movement at the camera trigger. Then to add to the hassle, they also like to hang out at about 90 FSW or deeper. Little buggers. But they are pretty.

I’m an obsessed photographer…    [ General,Photography ]

But I owe it all to my dad :). I don’t ever remember him being without a camera. When I was a small child, I have vivid memories of making playdough animals by the dim light of a darkroom redlight with my brother, as my dad made black and white prints and watched over us. He’s been gone for many years, but he left behind one of his first cameras, a Minolta Autocord TLR with a broken shutter. This camera moved around with me for many years and I re-discovered it in a box a couple of weeks ago. With a little internet surfing, I found a resource for repairing the camera (Karl Bryan, here in Oregon), and sent it off. Karl cleaned and fixed the camera, and replaced some leatherette. I got it back this week and it looks and works just beautifully. I’ve put two rolls of TMAX film through the camera now, and will have it developed very soon. I hope to have some shots from this camera up on the website shortly after. Isn’t it cute??

This dwarf hawkfish lives on the Wreck of the Ann, in the Russell Islands of the Solomons. He found a little colony of tube sponges in which to hide from me and the sponges make for a nice constrasting background.

Solomons 2006 Favorite of the Day, May 12, 2007    [ Diving,Photography,Travel ]

Now I wasn’t kidding when I said there would be alot of these little coral hermit crabs in my Solomons favorites that I post here. They are one of my favorite critters to shoot in the Solomons. This one has vivid colors and is on a very soft looking green coral, a nice combination.

Happy Cinco de Mayo!

In honor of my orange cat Tyler, now passed on, whose birthday was on Cinco de Mayo, I’m posting an orange-themed photo of a wire coral goby on a lovely wire coral.
